Reaping the Influence of Negative Words
Oct 01, 2025
“The tongue has the power of life and death, and those who love it will eat its fruit.” — Proverbs 18:21 (NIV)
Every word spoken in front of our children is a seed. When we sow words of hate—through tearing others down, criticizing harshly, or venting bitterness—we are planting seeds that will grow. A child who repeatedly hears this may learn suspicion instead of trust, sharpness instead of gentleness, pride instead of humility.
The fruit shows up later: friendships that crumble, relationships marked by judgment, or an inner voice that is quick to condemn. The reaping of influence is undeniable: what we plant in our children’s hearing will eventually grow in their living.
But there is hope. Just as words of hate plant weeds, words of love and honor sow beauty. Blessing others, even in their absence, teaches our children to extend grace. Speaking peace in heated moments shows them that gentleness is strength. Parents who choose to speak life raise children whose harvest is one of compassion, forgiveness, and wisdom.
Prayer
Father, guard my tongue and purify my heart. Help me to sow words that bring life, not death. Let my children overhear kindness, honor, and forgiveness more than they hear frustration or bitterness. Heal any seeds of hate that may already be planted, and replace them with seeds of love that point them to You. Amen.
Faith in Action
This week, be intentional about one conversation your child overhears. Whether it’s about a family member, a coworker, or a stranger, choose words that honor and uplift. Plant the seeds of love you want to see grow in your child’s life.
